Locations
Moldavite shards are found in a relatively small area known as the Central European strewn field, mainly across parts of the Czech Republic and nearby regions. Here are the key locations:
-
Southern Bohemia (Czech Republic)
The most famous and productive Moldavite region, known for high-quality stones with deep green colour and intricate, sculpted textures often called “hedgehog” patterns. This area is characterised by rolling countryside, forests, and river basins, particularly around České Budějovice and Třeboň.
-
Moravia (Czech Republic)
Moldavites from this region tend to be lighter green, smoother, and more rounded due to natural weathering. Located around Brno, Moravia features a mix of low hills, farmland, and vineyards, giving it a slightly warmer, drier landscape compared to Bohemia.
-
Lower Austria (Austria)
Finds here are relatively rare and usually smaller, often with simpler shapes. This region lies along the Danube and near the Czech border, with gentle valleys, forests, and historic rural settlements.
-
Bavaria (Germany)
Near the Nördlinger Ries impact crater, Moldavite fragments are uncommon and typically less well-formed due to proximity to the impact site. The area itself is a large circular basin with fertile farmland and the medieval town of Nördlingen at its centre.
